Marbles colors are prized for their aesthetic appeal of pronounced veining and bold colors.
Marble is calcium carbonate based. It’s made up of calcite crystal. Due to it’s calcium make up, marbles are vulnerable to abrasion and chemical attack. Abrasive attacks usually occurs from utensils and can be prevented by using a cutting board.
Cleaning products that have abrasives must not be used. Chemical attacks are caused by acidic products such as vinegar, spaghetti sauce, wine, etc.
The use of acidic cleaning products will also cause attack. Acidic solutions can permanently etch the surface. Applying a impregnating sealer will reduce acidic attack but will not eliminate it. Marble is best used in a low traffic area such as a bathroom or a fireplace surround.
